Plastic garden chairs become stained faded by exposure to the elements over time. Because paint won't adhere to the nonporous polyolefin resin they're made of, you may want to throw them away when this happens. However, with the right coating, you can refinish your weathered plastic chairs instead.

A few manufacturers make a spray paint that is formulated for use with resin plastic chairs. This means you can have your drab and stained plastic chairs looking like new in just a few hours. Put on rubber gloves and safety glasses. Clean dirt, dust and other material from older chairs with a damp cloth. Clean badly mildewed chairs with a household bleach and water mix and then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Allow the chair to dry and then sand the finish with a fine-grit sandpaper to remove some of the sheen. Wipe the chair with a dry cloth to remove the small particles and dust from sanding. Lay a drop cloth outside or in a well-ventilated space and set the plastic chair on top. Put on a painter’s mask to avoid breathing in fumes from the paint. Shake a can of enamel paint formulated for use with plastics for about two minutes. To make sure the paint is thoroughly shaken, spray a test strip on a piece of cardboard. Spray the paint onto the chair, keeping the can about 10 to 12 inches away from the plastic to avoid drips and runs in the finish.

Spray across the plastic in a sweeping motion, but maintain a constant distance between the nozzle and the plastic. Begin and finish each pass of spray off the plastic. Don’t paint the chair in one continuous motion. Instead, release the nozzle after each pass and overlap each pass by about a third to achieve an even finish. Wait at least an hour before moving the chair. Many plastic paints dry to the touch within about 15 minutes, but wait at least 24 hours before using the chair. I know, I’m such a tease. Anyways in the last post about the outdoor sofa makeover, I talked about how we wanted to do this patio makeover on a budget. Enter ugly beat up plastic chairs that I found at a local thrift store for a few measly dollars. I knew with a little TLC & some spray paint that these babies would be as good as new & be a great addition to our patio makeover. And actually these chairs are pretty heavy & are very sturdy so it was a great deal.

I hope this post makes you think twice about passing up some ugly plastic furniture at your local thrift store or inspires you to paint some plastic furniture of your own! So you have a not so pretty plastic piece of furniture. It’s so easy to give it a makeover that it would be a sin not to make it pretty! 1- wash the entire surface of the plastic piece of furniture. I like using windex or vinegar and water to clean with. I feel like it gets all of the dirts & oils completely off the surface which will allow the paint to adhere better to the plastic. 2- You can choose to prime if you want to. I don’t prime when painting plastic. One, because I’m lazy & I don’t feel like it’s necessary. I have never had a problem with paint coming off of my plastic pieces when I don’t prime. Plastic is an absorbent material and any kind of spray paint works very well in my opinion. But, if you do want to prime, you can use kilz or rust-oleums oil based primers for extra security that your paint will last & go on smooth.

My favorite spray paint to use is Rust-oleum (and no this post is not sponsored, but hey what’s up rust-oleum! I like your product!) I feel like for plastic and outdoor pieces in general it’s very durable and long lasting. I especially love the hammered textured series because it hides flaws & really leaves no room for error.Let your piece dry until it’s out in the weather conditions, but really now you have a beautiful “new” piece of furniture that you can be proud of and that will make your outdoor space look like a whole new area!
