The next day’s 12″ or so of snow had not yet arrived. Coincidental with the Christmas holidays The Denver Botanic Gardens were decorated with multi-colored electric lights though no religious symbols were present.  At least one display had a Christmas tree with gifts underneath so conclude what you will.

I took the slightly aging but still very able Nikon D5200 camera with the 18-55mm zoom lens. I attached it to my flimsy-legged Vanguard tripod and used the Nikon ML-L3 remote shutter release for the first half of my pictures. With the camera set to Night Landscape the remote allowed picture-taking without camera disturbance.  In this mode I found the ISO settings around 800 and the shutter speeds very slow (1/4 to 1/2 a second or so), thus the remote was a must.  Focus sharpness was marginal.  In hindsight perhaps I should have set it to hold manual focus and then released shutter with the remote. I later switched to Auto/No Flash mode and found the ISO greatly increased to around 3200 with the shutter speeds faster at 1/10 to 1/30th a second.  Focus was much better in many shots and I was able to shoot with the tripod legs together like a monopod, manually focusing and releasing the shutter.
