It can be especially difficult to get good results painting wicker pieces. If you know how to use a paint sprayer, though, you can get professional results and save a lot of time. DIY expert Kim Wilson shows us how she used a paint sprayer in a project to restore old porch furniture that had succumbed to the weather. Mom’s porch furniture had seen many years, endured the hot and humid conditions of the Virginia coast, and sadly, was in pretty bad shape. It was time to give the porch furniture a little well deserved T.L.C.
If you have wood rockers or chairs or wicker furniture then you are well aware that they can quickly succumb to the elements. Mom’s furniture had cracked and peeling paint, some wood rot, and the wicker table was simply a hot mess. Hand painting patio furniture is very time consuming and laborious. It’s so much easier and faster to rent a paint sprayer. You’ll get a professional-looking finish, even in tight places, and if you want to paint wicker, it’s definitely the best way to go. I rented my paint sprayer from The Home Depot. We love our local Home Depot store’s Tool Rental Department. We have rented several tools over the years from them. Home Depot provides an abundance of power tools that you can rent in some cases by the hour, the day, or the week. The helpful and friendly Home Depot associates will recommend the right tool for your job, and they’ll show you how to use the equipment. The most recent tool we rented was a pneumatic floor nailer when we installed gorgeous new hard wood flooring in our home.
This trip to Home Depot though was for their 20-volt cordless paint sprayer, which you can find online on the Paint Rental Equipment page. easy and cheap christmas table decorationsNo cords or hoses are necessary with this powerful cordless sprayer!cute ways to decorate christmas tree Use a wire brush to remove flaking, chipping, and peeling paint.cute ways to decorate christmas tree Sand the chipped and peeling surfaces with an electric sander using a 100 grit sand paper. baby room decor themesThis will quickly smooth the chipped and rough surfaces.cheap easy diy christmas decorations
Use wood filler if needed in any damaged areas. Lightly sand after wood filler is dry.decorate house for fall Apply primer with a brush to all areas that have exposed bare wood and allow to dry. Then go over all the primed areas with the fine grit sanding block to smooth any primer texture. Time to prepare the cordless paint sprayer. You can use either semi-gloss or gloss latex paint. I prefer using semi-gloss. The paint sprayer is easy to set up. You simply unscrew the paint compartment and pour in your choice of paint. Then you mix in a small amount of water. Follow the directions on the back of the paint can for the proper amount of water to mix in. Next you screw it back onto the sprayer and start the spraying process. It doesn’t take long to learn how to use a paint sprayer, but for spraying smoother pieces of furniture, it takes a bit of practice. I recommend practicing on a sheet of scrap plywood first.
Use water to practice with, then practice with paint. It is better to apply several light coats versus heavier coats that the wicker can’t handle. You want to avoid dripping, so being patient is key if you want to get a professional looking result. Patience and hard work pays off! We have breathed new life into these pieces. Just look at how gorgeous the furniture looks now! Even mom’s grand-doggies are enjoying the “new” porch furniture! And to think, these rockers and table might have ended up on the curb for the trash man! Here's how it works: Anybody can ask a question The best answers are voted up and rise to the top I have some outdoor metal chairs that have a few rust spots and the paint is chipping in a number of places. I'm looking for the best way to clean off the rust and paint so I can repaint them.
I would try a wire brush first. Either a hand model or a rotary one that would fit into your power drill may do the trick. You can also get small toothbrush size wire brushes to get into the small spots. They make spray paint designed to go on "right over the rust". A wire brush to get off any loose flaking paint and rust, then spray away. Rustoleum is one brand, but basically if you go to the hardware store, find the paint area, then look around for shelves full of spray cans, you will hit the jackpot. Read the label to be sure, but if the word Rust is in the name, generally you don't need to strip the old paint and you don't need to worry about rust that isn't forming large flakes and half falling off. You could use a grinder with a heavy grit sandpaper to remove the paint and the rust. If the rust is not that deep, you might be able to use a pressure washer with a high psi nossle. That will remove the paint and loose rust spot very well. For the spots of rust that are too deep, you might be able to use a rustolium primer to paint on it first after the cleaning then paint it.
