Here, he outlines his dos and don’ts of decorating with the luxurious material.1. “It’s an expensive material, so if your pocketbook is challenged, a little bit of velvet in a room can go a long way,” Redd says. “Not everyone can afford to cover his or her sofa in the material. But, if you like the luminous look of velvet, put it on a pillow and then pick a linen fabric for the sofa.” 2. Balance the room with other materials. “I think there needs to be a mixture of fabrics and textures in a room,” Redd says.

“Luckily, velvet is a pretty universal material and works with most others. I love it with linen and taffeta; that’s sort of a combination of high and low."3. Choose a color that speaks to you. “All colors are beautiful in velvet,” Redd says. “Personally, I like rich, glittering colors. Prelle’s velvets are my all-time favorites. They have the most wonderful shades of Marie Antoinette blues that I absolutely love. They also have really great shades of red and amazing tobacco colors. Schumacher is a great source as well.” 4. Pick a room that shows off your personal style. “Velvet looks great in a living room or on chair seats in the dining room,” Redd says. “I think it’s wonderfully cozy in a bedroom or even a library. Those are all sort of personal rooms. On the other hand, I wouldn’t use it in a breakfast room or kitchen. Velvet has a nap, so a food like peanut butter will be hard to clean up!” 5. Rethink those velvet curtains. “I love upholstering velvet on the walls,” Redd says.

“It fits them well. I think it gives you a sense of luxury, but I’m not crazy about velvet curtains. It tends to look a little Anne Rice of Interview with the Vampire, if you will. I tend to decorate with curtains that have flowing, breezy qualities to them. Velvet looks too thick and dense for the walls. However, I have used a very, very thin type of eco velvet on drapes for a project in Houston in the library.”6. Let it age. “Velvet wears really well,” Redd says. “Sometimes you will see a chair that’s upholstered in a rare red velvet that has a visible patina. I love it when it’s aged. It gives an immediate soul to the room. You can buy new, and wait for it to age, but of course, you sometimes can find a chair in vintage velvet, and if it works, I say leave it.”7. Use velvet in an unconventional way. “You can use gaufrage velvet, where you cut a pattern into the nap of the fabric,” Redd says. “There are very few companies that still do it, but you can get some wonderful patterns that way and use them for upholstering a sofa or chair, the walls of a room, or an accessory like a pillow.”
