So the Kocmonds turned to designer Ally Whalen to come up with a solution. Her idea: Swap the eating and food-prep zones to allow a dining island more than twice the size of its predecessor and an L-shaped banquette in the opposite corner to host a crowd.

To help this one fit into its new surroundings, we painted it to match the wall for a seamless look that also provokes smiles. First, we primed the wall and dresser and put down a base coat of soft blue on each. Then we made a “story stick” to save us the trouble of repeated measuring: Simply wrap bits of painter’s tape around a yardstick to indicate 1- and 3-inch-wide white stripes separated by 2- and 11-inch fields of blue.
