Page 1 of 7 Page 1 of 7 Christmas Tree Shops is a retail chain that began in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts in 1970 as a complex of three small stores (Front Shop, Back Shop, and Barn Shop). The first complex, on Route 6A, explains why the name is Christmas Tree Shops instead of Shop. The chain's founders were Doreen and Charles Bilezikian. Since the 1980s, the chain had slowly been expanding beyond Cape Cod. As of May 2014, the company had 83 stores in 18 states. Expansion for the chain has included stores in Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. Its newest stores opened in Augusta, Georgia, Dallas, Texas,[3] and Greensboro, North Carolina;
the three opened under new ownership. Christmas Tree Shops was acquired by Bed Bath & Beyond in 2003, though the Bilezikians remain involved in the executive operations. The original stores on Route 6A were closed in January 2007, though the site is now occupied by stores owned by the Bilezikians' son Greg.[4] Some of the earlier Cape Cod stores, as in West Dennis, are dwarfed by recently-built stores. The company maintains distribution centers in Middleboro, Massachusetts, and Florence, New Jersey, the latter opening in 2008. Prior to being moved to Middleboro, distribution was done from the former Cape Cod Coliseum, in South Yarmouth. Middleboro also serves as the chain's new headquarters. The Christmas Tree Shops store at the base of the Sagamore Bridge in Sagamore, Massachusetts. Christmas Tree Shops are bargain stores, selling food, toys, household furnishings, and Christmas decorations. Most stores typically resemble older buildings (Colonial, Victorian, or even Old English barn styles (such as in Sagamore and Pembroke, Massachusetts; and Warwick, Rhode Island).
Some, such as the Lynnfield, Massachusetts store, are even more conceptualized; it is known for its lighthouse and fishing village motif. Christmas Tree Shops also has several stores in enclosed shopping malls, such as inside the Holyoke Mall at Ingleside in Massachusetts; and the Colonie Center and Salmon Run Mall in Watertown, both in New York. "Christmas Tree Shops express" stores feature a smaller footprint; the merchandise mix is oriented towards seasonal offerings. "andThat!" is a new banner used to expand Christmas Tree Shops to other parts of the country not familiar with the concept in order to eliminate confusion. The A&P Woodland Park store closed in November of last year. The A&P store located at 560 Valley Rd. in Wayne, closed earlier this year, replaced by Wayne Natural Food Market. by Christmas Tree Shops and Cost Plus World Market are subsidiaries of Bed Bath and Beyond. Woodland Park Mayor Keith Kazmark said the borough is happy to finally bring in new tenants at the location. "We’re very pleased to see the old A&P space will be occupied. These tenants are a good fit for this corridor," Kazmark said, after the planning board meeting. According to Kazmark, the stores are expected to bring 150 new jobs to the borough. "These stores will be a good anchor for that part of Route 46 in Woodland Park," Kazmark noted. Currently, Halloween City occupies the former A&P space, located on the border of Woodland Park and Little Falls, off of McBride Avenue. Halloween City is expected to be out of the retail space by early November, according to Kazmark, so construction can begin. The building is going to be subdivided into three parts, one which will house "and That!," another that will house "World Market," and a third, smaller space that will house another tenant to be determined.
The exterior of the building will be renovated and the façade will be changed. The smallest store is estimated to open in June or July of 2017, according to Kazmark. Some local residents were asked on their feelings about the type of stores coming into the location, some of which were still holding out for another supermarket. "The stores coming in are OK, but I think we need to fill a gap for something we don’t have in town, such as a bowling alley or some activity for kids. This is after all, a community," said Nadia Aponte, local resident. Another local resident, Carrie Miller-Figueira, said that the new businesses are a good step for the town. "I personally think it’s a good idea because it’ll bring business into the town and bring us revenue," she explained. "I think ‘World Market’ will be a nice type of competitor for Fairway and Bed, Bath & Beyond. In regards to ‘and That!’ I love Christmas Tree Shops. Anytime you can get a bargain for cute things for your home, that’s a positive.
It’s a lot better than having an empty store front with no revenue for the town." Miller-Figueira agreed that another food market would have been a good thing. "It would have been nice, but if there isn’t any bidding for that, then why pass up someone who wants to come into the town who is wiling to bring business to our town?" Additionally, "and That!" and "World Market" aren’t the only new tenants coming to the shopping center. The Little Falls and Woodland Park Planning Boards approved a site plan application for a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen to be constructed on Route 46 west near the Best Buy computers and electronics store. Rainbow Sales and Services, a children’s outdoor play and swing set company, and Custom Tailor for Men & Women are located at the site will Popeyes will be constructed. The Popeyes building is located in Woodland Park and the parking lot to the site is located in Little Falls. Popeyes would be located slightly east of the former A&P site.
