BuskingBackground: Busking, 42, is the owner of Ju Sans & Associates, a professional Christmas tree decorating service that she and a friend founded in 1979.

Today, as sole owner, Busking travels cross-country to oversee the shaping and decorating of Christmas displays in 29 states. Prior to forming Ju Sans, she did secretarial work, ran a cleaning business and owned a macrame shop. She is married, the mother of two children and has lived in the Beverly area since she was 5.Years as a professional Christmas tree decorator: 18My first paid job as a Christmas tree decorator was in 1975 at Crossroads Sporting on Archer and Western Avenues for my girlfriend's brother. He and another man owned Revlis, a Blue Island firm that manufactured some of the first artificial Christmas trees. I worked for Revlis for three years, during which time my friend and I formed Ju Sans. In 1981 she had to bow out, and I went solo. Those first years I had the luxury of being able to work slowly, learning as I went, and if something wasn't right, take it down and do it over. I began to realize there was a real need out there for professional decorators and that the artificial-tree industry was definitely going to grow.

My first big break came in 1982 when someone from Bradford Novelty saw my work and helped get me started doing chain stores. That year I had 27 Zayres to do, and I had to hire six people. I knew I had reached a pivotal point in my career. There is literally not a month that goes by that I don't work on Christmas trees. I do conventions, the New York toy fair in February, meet with manufacturers to see new trees or iron out last-minute details and set up the Frank's Nursery and Crafts sample store in Detroit.Frank's is definitely my biggest account, with 290 stores in 17 states. Some of my other chains are B.J.'s; two East Coast chains, Rickle's and Costco; Shopko, which is in the Northern states; Price, in nine states; and Pace, which has stores in 25 states. I also do several smaller chains.Last year Ju Sans set up displays in 645 stores in 29 states, which totals 8,835 trees with 95 percent of the work being done in a six-week period. This year trees went up between Sept. 9 and Nov. 1.I couldn't even begin to estimate how many trees I myself have assembled and decorated over the years-thousands.

In the beginning, people would just come up while I was working and ask if I could do their bank or restaurant. Now, the manufacturers know who I am, and they contact me. I am hired by artificial-tree manufacturers, who want the trees to look like they're supposed to; by novelty companies, who want their decorations shown to their best advantage; and by retailers, who want visually enticing displays.I do work for five tree companies and one novelty company. I then subcontract independent employees to do the various stores. In 1992 I had 80 subcontractors who had approximately another 40 people working for them.I need only about 10 new people per year. When I do need new shapers or decorators, I run an ad in the paper and interview over the phone. Then there are training sessions for everybody. In all these years I would say there have really been only two people who didn't work out. Most stay with me for a while. Several have been with me for 10 years, and one of my top decorators has been with me since the '70s.

I've been really lucky that the people responding to my ads generally are artistically inclined or are just used to hard work. A number of my people in Detroit used to work on automobile assembly lines. In a store like Frank's, where they have between 24 and 27 display trees, a team of five or six people will assemble all 27 trees, put lights on seven of them and completely decorate at least four of them in six or seven hours, then move on to another store. It's very disheartening after all that work to see it destroyed, sometimes in a matter of days, by customers who touch, yank or take tree branches out to see how it's constructed, not realizing the hours of work and the pride that went into making it so beautiful. People who do that deprive others of seeing the display as it was intended to look. It's also a little embarrassing to be putting up Christmas trees in September. I've jokingly asked for "combat pay" until the middle of October. Once upon a time I thought I would be able to influence those who have the final word on when Christmas departments went up.
