Too Cold When you paint your house when temperatures are too cold, the paint can’t cure properly because it takes the paint longer to dry. This leaves your freshly painted surface vulnerable to dirt, insects and other debris. Improperly cured paint is also vulnerable to peeling, bubbling, cracking and chipping. Oil-based paints should be applied when temperatures are no lower than 40 F. Latex, or water-based paints require a temperature of at least 50 F to properly cure. Colder temperatures don't only prevent your paint from curing, they reduce the life expectancy of the paint and the absorption of water that results can cause mildew growth. Too Hot Heat affects paint adhesion primarily because it causes the paint to dry too rapidly. Temperatures over 90 F can cause paint to bubble and blister, which results in peeling once the paint cures. The surface of the wall heats with the sun, so the best way to avoid blisters and bubbling is to follow the sun around your house so you are never painting in direct sunlight and the surface doesn't get overheated.

Because the paint needs time to cure, expected nighttime temperatures are as important as daytime temperatures. Most paints need at least 24 hours to properly cure. When nighttime temperatures cool drastically in comparison to daytime temperatures, dew forms as soon as the sun goes down.
